Zuria vs habesha kemis vs tilf

They are not three different dresses. Habesha kemis (ሀበሻ ቀሚስ) is the Amharic name for the traditional Ethiopian dress, and zuria (ዙርያ) is the name many Eritrean and Tigrayan women use for their traditional dress. Tilf (ጥልፍ) is not a dress at all. It is the hand embroidery that decorates one.

Habesha kemis (ሀበሻ ቀሚስ)

"Kemis" means dress in Amharic. The habesha kemis is the long cultural dress made from shemma cotton with decorated borders. It is the name most people in Addis Ababa and the Ethiopian diaspora use. More about the habesha kemis.

Zuria (ዙርያ)

Zuria is the word you'll hear from Eritrean and Tigrayan women, often for a white cotton dress with embroidered or woven borders, worn for church, holidays and weddings. Patterns, colours and the way the netela (ነጠላ) shawl is worn can differ between communities. Many women in the diaspora use "zuria" and "habesha kemis" for the same kind of dress.

Tilf (ጥልፍ)

Tilf is hand embroidery stitched onto the cloth after it is woven, often around the neckline, down the front, on the sleeves and at the hem. It is different from tibeb (ጥበብ), which is woven into the cloth on the loom. When embroidery is added on top of a woven border, it's called tilf tibeb. A "tilf dress" usually just means a kemis or zuria with lots of hand embroidery.
