You need 6 measurements for a custom habesha kemis or zuria: belly button (ሰደርያ), height (ቁመት), shoulder (ትክሻ / መንኮብ), chest (ደረት / ኣፍ ልቢ), waist (መዓንጣ / ወገብ) and hand (ኢድ / እጅ). Use a soft tape measure, measure over thin clothing, and ask someone to help. Write down your real body measurements, because the maker adds the room for comfort.
A 48-second guide to the 6 measurements, with English labels.
Stand straight. Start at the base of the neck (top of the shoulder next to the neck) and measure straight down the front, over the bust, to your belly button.
Stand straight, feet together, in the shoes you will wear. Start at the belly button and measure straight down to the floor.
Stand straight, arms relaxed. Measure across your back from the outer edge of one shoulder bone to the outer edge of the other.
Stand straight over a thin layer. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, level all the way round under the arms. Snug, not tight.
Stand straight and breathe normally. Wrap the tape around your natural waist, the narrowest part just above the belly button, keeping it level.
Arm relaxed by your side. Start at the outer edge of the shoulder and measure down the outside of the arm to the wrist bone (or where you want the sleeve to end).
Six: belly button, height, shoulder, chest, waist and hand (sleeve). Your maker uses them to cut the dress to your body.
No. Write down your real body measurements. The maker adds the ease.
